Growth without health magnifies dysfunction

30 August 2026

Most church consulting sells growth. A church that grows while its leadership is exhausted does not become healthier — it becomes a larger version of the same problem.

Most church consulting sells growth. It is what churches ask for, and it is the
easiest thing to promise.

But a church that grows while its leadership is exhausted and its congregation
has stopped trusting its decisions does not become a healthier church. It
becomes a larger version of the same problem, with more people inside it.

What we measure instead

Ten dimensions of congregational health, each belonging to one of three
movements. The order is not stylistic — a church cannot be recalibrated while
its leadership is unwell.

  • Christ-centred vitality, and whether prayer is practised or merely stated
  • Leadership health, measured before anything is restructured
  • Whether the people who arrive are still there two years later
We will not restructure a church until it is well enough to be restructured.

There is no attendance question. Attendance is the variable European
congregations have least power to move, and the one that says least about
faithfulness.
